Established in 1979, Beddington Heights is a community in northwest Calgary that is home to over 11,000 residents. With two elementary schools, numerous green spaces, and easy access to shopping and amenities, it is a great neighbourhood to settle in and raise a family. As a suburban neighbourhood, Beddington Heights is quite far from the City Centre, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of landmarks and recreational opportunities for you to explore.
Let’s take a look at what the community of Beddington Heights has to offer.
Nearby Parks and Walking Paths
Beddington Heights has the unique privilege of being located very close to not one, but two fantastic natural environment parks. Both Nose Hill Park and West Nose Creek Park are only a very short drive away, making Beddington Heights the perfect community for families who love to spend time outdoors.
Nose Hill Park, which lies to the southwest and which is easily accessible via 14th Street, is the second largest park in the whole city. In fact, it is one of the largest natural environment parks in all of North America. Nose Hill Park offers numerous hiking trails and opportunities to see wildlife in the heart of a major metropolitan area.
West Nose Creek Park, which borders Beddington Heights to the north, is also a wonderful place to experience nature without having to drive out of the city. The pathways of this park follow the meandering West Nose Creek, and offer visitors many opportunities to see native plant and animal life.
If you’re not looking for much of a drive and would rather take a walk within the community, then you can take your kids for a fun day out at the local Beacham Park. Located just off Berwick Drive, it has plenty of green space and a baseball diamond.
Recreational Opportunities for the Whole Family
Calgary weather being what it is, it’s not every day that you’ll be able to enjoy a nice walk outside. For most of the year you will probably be looking for fun and rewarding indoor activities that are close to home.
The first place you’ll want to check out will be Beddington Towne Centre, which is easily accessible off both Beddington Boulevard and Centre Street. This is where you can run all of your errands and get any and all of your shopping done. Beddington Towne Centre is a good-sized mall with over 50 different stores and major outlets.
Beddington Heights is also home to the Beddington Heights Community Arts Centre. Here you will find the Beddington Heights Theatre, where you can watch shows put on by StoryBook Theatre and Front Row Centre Players, two of Calgary’s longest running theatre companies.
The Beddington Heights Community Arts Centre is also the place to go if you are interested in signing yourself or your kids up for karate lessons. Every Wednesday evening it plays host to classes from the All Canadian Karate Union. You can register at any time, and, once you have, you will also be allowed to train at the ACKU Clubs located in the nearby communities of Sandstone and Kincora.
Places to Unwind and Have a Good Time
So, you’ve seen that Beddington Heights has some great opportunities for both outdoor and indoor recreational activities, but what about places to unwind and get together with some friends after a long day at work? In this case, Beddington Heights has three good options.
Two of these options can be found right at the Beddington Towne Centre. Madisons Restaurant & Bar is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat at any time of day. The menu offers a tasty selection of pizza, burgers, and pasta. Nearby you will also be able to find The Pig & Whistle Pub, which has a great deal on wings every Tuesday and Wednesday. You can also stop in for pizza night on Thursdays if that’s more to your liking.
Finally, another favourite spot to get together with friends after a long day is the Fiddlers Green Pub, located right on the corner of Bergen Road and Centre Street. You can stop in here for great food, great drinks, live music, and to watch the latest UFC fight.
