Humidifiers in Calgary
The right humidity level is important for you and your home. It can mean a lot to your comfort and even your health.
Luckily the humidity level that’s right for you is about the same as what your home needs: somewhere between 35% – 55%. Your body thrives when the humidity level isn’t so dry that you become prone to sore throats and colds. Your home needs it to be dry enough that mould problems don’t develop, but moist enough that your hardwood floors and other wood furnishings don’t dry out and crack.
Humidification and Dehumidification Systems
That’s why the home experts at Knight carry a variety of humidification and dehumidification systems that work with your furnace or air conditioner to maintain a perfect moisture level at all times. If you need help finding the right system for your home and your budget, talk to us.
Furnace Humidifiers for Your Health and Your Home
Most people notice the dry air in winter – it’s caused by our energy-efficient airtight homes and the drying effect of our furnaces. For some, dry air is a problem because it dries skin, hair, eyes and throats. Aside from the discomfort, it can lead to constant sore throats, aggravate allergies and even impact work or school.
Why suffer when you can fix the problem? A whole-home humidifier will ensure your entire indoor environment is what your body needs.
Connected to your water supply and your air system, it has a host of advantages over a standalone or single-room unit:
- You don’t need to keep filling it up with water.
- You don’t need to be stuck in front of a small unit to get the benefit.
- Virtually noiseless.
- Once a year maintenance.
- Scale buildup from hard water isn’t as much of an issue.
They not only work better but also save you valuable time.
Types of Humidifiers
Your home also has a minimum humidity level as well. When it’s too dry you get static electricity happening, and wood floors can dry out and warp or crack. In fact, most hardwood floor installers require you to maintain a proper humidity level in your home as part of their warranty. If you have family heirlooms made of wood, humidity control is a must.
There are three main types of humidifiers, and each has their own advantages.
Maximum Effectiveness: Steam Humidifiers
Steam humidifiers work by heating a reservoir of water to the boiling point, and the steam is allowed to vent out into your air ducts. Knight recommends opting for steam humidifiers because they are not only the most effective, they make the most efficient use of water as well. A steam unit will convert 90% of the water it uses to moisture. It also only takes what it needs from your water supply, and you get better control of your humidity level. It does use slightly more power than other types of humidifiers, however.
Medium Effectiveness: Flow Through
With flow through humidifiers, a small sprinkle of water is allowed to drip onto a pad. The water then works its way through the unit and evaporates out into your air. Any water that does not evaporate is allowed to trickle away. There is no standing water (as with a drum humidifier) so there’s little risk of mould or bacteria growth, but more water is wasted.
Budget: Drum Humidifiers
These consist of a foam pad-covered wheel that rotates through a pan of water. These humidifiers are only appropriate for the driest spaces, as there is standing water and it can promote bacterial and mould growth. You also don’t get great precision in controlling the humidity level of your home. Knight will install these on request, although we feel it’s a last resort.
There are different sizes of all types of humidifiers to suit different sizes of homes. All you need to do is tell your Knight representative the square footage of your home, and they will give you a recommended humidifier size in gallons per day.
Dehumidifiers to Control Mould
A large family is a wonderful thing, but with more people comes more breathing, more showering and more cooking. It all means more moisture in the air – sometimes too much. Even in winter this can lead to condensation and even mould problems.
Mould spores are naturally all around us, but they’re not a problem unless there’s too much moisture and they start to grow. This can happen wherever moisture collects throughout your home.
If the air is moist enough that you’re getting frost on the inside of your windows, that’s a telltale sign that your home is at risk for a mould problem. But what you don’t see is what’s happening inside the walls. When our Chinooks roll through and everything warms up, that pretty frost on your window can melt and wreck your window frame or collect inside your walls.
